1. Select a particular type of character organization we reviewed (hysterical, masochistic, obsessive-compulsive). What are the central issues with respect to drive processes and or object relations and ego functions. What are major defenses used? What are some of the issues that come up in treatment?

2. What does it mean to say we live in a therapeutic society? Where does it come from and how is it different than pre-therapeutic societies? What messages does such a society give us about our emotions? What are the strengths/weaknesses of such a society?

3. According to Rogoff, individualist societies, such as those in the West, create individualism in subtle practices that reinforce our independence and autonomy. Give an example of two such practices as described by Rogoff. How might they appear different in a more collectivist society? How might developmental norms be different in collectivist societies?
