Overview

Nurse leaders are present throughout all nursing roles, from bedside to administration and through all spheres of care. You may be familiar with a variety of leadership styles from your undergraduate studies. MSN leaders are best positioned to lead, influence, and participate in practice change within complex healthcare organizations. As described in DeNisco (2020), a contemporary leadership model has a foundation of trust and has four pillars of professionalism, relationships, inspiration, and business skills, leading to results of high-quality healthcare. Leaders in complex healthcare systems are pressed with high demands to achieve desired performance and outcomes. In this project, you will consider your individual leadership style and how it compares to the transformational leadership model presented in DeNisco. Several strategic tools can help you be a successful MSN leader, for example, the use of tools for time and stress management. This assignment will help you identify strategies to strengthen your leadership skills, support personal resources, and communicate all within various practice settings. Regardless of which track you have chosen, developing skills in written and oral professional communication, time management, stress management, and reflection will be useful in multiple leadership settings throughout your career.

Scenario

Self-evaluation is part of an annual process of reflection. As part of this process, you must complete an analysis of your current skills, accomplishments, goals, and objectives and create a strategic plan for how to improve on each of those components. In addition, your organization requires a written summary as part of the annual evaluation process. This self-evaluation summary includes communication skills, leadership style and skills, time and stress management skills, and areas of opportunity for self-improvement and prioritizing those opportunities.

Directions

For background on this self-evaluation summary, review your survey results and journals from Modules One and Two and then analyze gaps and opportunities for further professional development. Include three sources to support your claims. Specifically, include the following in your self-evaluation summary:

  1. Assess personal/professional leadership style. Analyze where your leadership style fits into the transformational leadership model using your self-assessments results from Module One as a guide. Having an awareness of the strategies that you tend to use most often and discovering new strategies that you could test out may reveal opportunities to optimize your personal resources and maximize your productivity while minimizing stress and burnout. Putting together a plan to use specific strategies to improve on those areas of opportunity is the next step. Consider your self-assessment analyses and the courses from CITI, and focus on an area that you would like to further develop. Address the following in your response:
