This assignment will give you practice running descriptive statistics on both numeric &

categorical variables and reporting them in APA style.

Each question you need to answer is bolded in the Assignment Questions section. The un-

bolded parts of the questions are instructions on what to do in order to answer the bolded

questions.

All questions can be answered using the Project Data data file.

For each question that asks for it, make sure to paste your output below the answer to the

question. An easy way to do this is to take screenshots of each table/graph and paste it below

the question.

This is an individual assignment akin to an exam and should be treated as such. You should

not consult any other people or AI, etc. while completing this assignment. If there is evidence

that you have used other people and/or certain technologies to complete this assignment, it will

result in a reduction of grade for the assignment and an academic integrity violation reported to

the Provosts Office.

You may use the lectures & readings from this course, your lecture notes or practice

assignments, and any other course material youd like to help you complete this assignment.

Type your answers below each question and change the color of the font. Please do not erase

the questions.

Assignment Questions

1. How many variables are in this data set?

a. How many of the variables are numeric?

b. How many of the variables are categorical?

2. Choose 3 numeric & 3 categorical variables to use for this assignment. List them below

and include whether theyre numeric or categorical & what is listed under Label in

the Variable view of the data.

3. For your 3 categorical variables:

a. Run descriptives for each categorical variable & create a bar graph for each

categorical variable.

b. Write 1 sentence in APA style per variable describing how many people fell into

each category. Make sure to include both the percent (%) and frequency for

each group.

c. For each categorical variable, state the category that represents the mode of

that variable.

d. Paste the frequency table & bar graph from SPSS for each variable below your

answer

4. For your 3 numeric variables:

a. Run descriptives for each numeric variable & create a histogram for each numeric

variable.

b. Write 1-2 sentences in APA style per variable describing the sample size (n),

minimum score, maximum score, mean, & standard deviation.

c. Paste the descriptive statistics table & histogram from SPSS for each variable

below your answer.

5. For your 3 numeric variables:

a. Transform each numeric variable into a z-score by following these instructions:

i. ANALYZE

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

DESCRIPTIVES

ii. Move all 3 of your numeric variables into the Variables box.

iii. Check off Save standardized values as variables

iv. Click OK

v. This will give you descriptive statistics for your variables and create 3 new

variables in the data vieweach new variable will be the old variable

name with Z in front of it (e.g., ZRecall).

1. This is the z-score for each value of that variable

b. For each new z-score variable, run descriptive statistics (mean, standard

deviation) & create histograms for the Z variables. What is the M & SD for each

of the Z variables?

Project 1

Statistics in Psychology

c. Explain why the M & SD for each of the Z variables makes sense given what

youve learned about the z-score distribution.

d. Paste the descriptive statistics table & histogram from SPSS for each Z variable

below your answer.
