- Why you selected this picture/why does it speak to you?
I chose the above image because I thought it showed how nurses really connect with their patients. The nurse comforting the child with a teddy bear showed how important it is to make your patient feel safe and cared for, especially when they could be scared (which is normally seen in children). It reminded me that nursing isn’t just about medical treatments, but understanding people, and helping them feel cared for.
- What core values of nursing do you see in this image (integrity, altruism, inclusivity, compassion, courage, humility, advocacy, caring, autonomy, humanity, or social justice)?
Some core values of nursing that I see in this image is advocacy, as the nurse seems to be putting the child’s comfort first even with small gestures like giving the teddy bear to the child. Integrity can also be seen with providing care in a professional manner. Lastly compassion can be seen in the image by the nurse clearly focusing on the child’s emotional needs.
- How does the historical context of this image reflect the image you selected?
Historically, nursing seemed to be out of compassion, as seen from Florence Nightingale caring for wounded soldiers and continuing today with pediatric nurses supporting children in hospitals. While nursing education has advanced, the core human connection seemed to have not. Like Nightingale, the nurse in the image above seemed to be focused on supporting the child emotionally, creating a safe and caring environment where the child can feel comforted while receiving care at the same time.
