Biology in My HBCU Community-Ecosystems and Environmental Change Portion
Semester-Long Digital Portfolio: Biology in My HBCU Community
Each module contributes one Portfolio Entry to a semester-long project exploring how biology connects to your campus, culture, and community.
At the end of the semester, you will combine all five entries into a Digital Portfolio that tells a story of life processes from the environment to human body systems, specifically in the context of YOUR HBCU.
General Student Directions (Same for Modules 15)
- Choose a Focus: For each modules theme, select an example or case study from campus, your hometown, or the local community.
- Gather Evidence: Take photos, make observations, record interviews, or collect simple data that illustrates the topic. (No expensive equipmentyour phone is fine.)
- Create Your Entry: Using ONE creative format (poster, infographic, narrated slides, photo essay, or 12 min short video), explain the concept in your own words and show how it applies to your chosen example.
- Connect to Previous Work: Add a short paragraph linking this modules topic to your prior portfolio entry, showing how your understanding is expanding.
- Upload Your Work: Submit your entry digitally to the course site and store it for later compilation.
Module 2 Biology in My HBCU Community: Ecosystems and Environmental Change
Key Topic: Energy Flow and Climate Change Impacts
Portfolio Entry Title: Ecosystem Energy Map & Climate Risk
- Task: Identify an ecosystem on or near campus (garden, pond, courtyard). Map how energy moves through it (producers, consumers, decomposers). Then, research one way climate change may affect this system (e.g., heat stress, invasive pests).
- Creative Element: Present as a simple energy flow diagram paired with your climate-impact note.
- Connection Sentence: This ecosystem includes ___, which is connected to the population I studied in Module 1 through ____.
- Deliverable: Digital map/infographic with energy flow and impact story captions.
