For this assignment, you will respond to one of the two prompts below and make a thoughtful argument about The Shahnameh and the Sundiata. You will then present your argument to your instructor via a PowerPoint presentation of 8-10 slides

Part 1

Choose ONE of these two prompts.

1. Mentors: The heroes of The Shahnameh and Sundiata, Rustem and Sundiata, learn from many others during their journeys. Choose one character whom you believe to be each hero’s most influential mentor and explain what each mentor teaches and why those lessons are so significant. Are there any cultural values that Rustem and Sundiata can’t be taught by their mentors and must learn on their own to become successful leaders? How do these two mentors in the epics compare to similar figures in your own life?

OR

1. Antagonists: Select one antagonist from The Shahnameh and one from Sundiata. Study, compare, and contrast the two characters. What significant choices do each of these characters make, and why? In what ways do they adhere to the established values and norms of their societies, and in what ways do they break from them? What price (if any) do they pay for the choices they make? What did you learn from these characters that you did not learn from the heroes?

Part 2

Create a PowerPoint/slide* presentation of your argument. Include both text and images that illustrate and enhance the argument you are making. Be sure to include and cite quotations from each text that support your claims. Use the following as an outline of what to include:

• Start with a title page that includes your name, the title of the presentation, the date, the course, the name of your professor. (1 slide)
• Explain the general topic and put forth a thesis, an argument that brings both epics into conversation with each other. (1 slide)
• Apply that topic to both The Shahnameh and to Sundiata. Give specific examples and quotations from the texts to support your analyses. Use in-text citations in MLA format for the quotations, and be sure to include page numbers from the texts included in this course. (5-7 slides)
• Conclude your argument. How does your argument help us as readers to better understand these two epics? (1 slide)
• Your final slide should be your Works Cited slide, with both texts in MLA format. (1 slide).
