Healthy People 2030 objective focused on reducing maternal mortality and eliminating racial disparities in pregnancy-related deaths.Introduction
In this assignment, you will select a specific population experiencing health disparities and conduct an epidemiological analysis to understand the scope and impact of a health issue within that group. This foundational work is your first step toward developing a targeted intervention proposal and crafting a compelling pitch aimed at improving health equity within an integrated care setting. The data you gather here will guide your analysis of root causes and inform the design of an intervention that is evidence-based, culturally responsive, and tailored to the needs of your chosen population.

- Select Your Population and Health Issue
- Choose a population group that experiences notable health disparities. This could be defined by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, disability status, geographic location, or another relevant social identity.
- Consider intersectionality how overlapping identities (e.g., race, gender, socioeconomic status, disability) and systemic factors together influence health outcomes for your population.
- Identify a specific health issue or disease that disproportionately affects this population. Examples include diabetes in Native American communities, maternal mortality among Black women, or asthma in low-income urban children.
- Gather Epidemiological Data
- Research and collect quantitative data to describe the health issue within your chosen population. Aim to include the following:
- Prevalence and/or incidence: How common is the health issue? How many new cases occur?
- Mortality and morbidity rates: How many deaths or disease complications occur due to this condition?
- Trends over time: Has the situation improved, worsened, or remained stable?
- Comparisons: How does the populations health outcome compare to other groups or the general population?
- Additional relevant statistics: Hospitalization rates, access to care, or any other epidemiological measures related to your health issue.
- Where possible, include data reflecting intersectional groups (e.g., Black women, low-income LGBTQ+ youth). If such data are limited or unavailable, note this limitation and discuss its impact on understanding health equity.
- Use Credible Sources
- Utilize at least 2-3 reputable sources such as government health databases (CDC, WHO, NIH), peer-reviewed journal articles, or reports from recognized health organizations.
- Provide full citations for your sources.
- Analyze and Summarize Your Findings
- Write a concise report (approximately 2 – 3 pages) that:
- Describes your chosen population and health issue.
- Presents key epidemiological data with context.
- Highlights any notable disparities or trends that emerge from the data.
- Explains how intersectional identities and social determinants may influence the epidemiological patterns you observe.
- Explains why this data is important for understanding the health equity challenges faced by this population.
