Assignment #1: Personal Philosophy of Nursing

Scholarly Essay Using APA format

As defined by the ANA, “Nursing theories provide a foundation for clinical decision-making. These theoretical models in nursing shape nursing research and create conceptual blueprints, ultimately determining the how and why that drive nurse-patient interactions.”

Understanding the “how and why” of our profession is essential as nurses are knowledge workers. Peter Drucker illuminated the importance of knowledge in work, in his seminal theory of management. You will find that nurses should possess all of the Intellectual Virtues for knowledge work as we add to the foundation of information in our profession.

Keep these definitions in mind as you develop your own personal philosophy of nursing.

Guidelines for writing a personal Philosophy of Nursing (Masters, 2023 p. 121-123).

Carefully read and consider Chapter 3 (pages 109-126) – Philosophy of Nursing in Master’s text

Carefully review this website – What is Nursing Theory?

Utilizing the Guide for Writing a Personal Philosophy of Nursing – Box 3-2 on page 122, answer each of the questions thoughtfully. These are the headings for the paper.

Identify which nursing theorist, THAT LOOKS LIKE YOU, supports your personal philosophy of nursing most closely and describe why. (Do not choose Florence Nightingale! – she did not demonstrate inclusivity!!)

Submit in APA format, approximately 5 pages excluding title and reference page. An abstract is not needed for this assignment.
