Parenting Observation Report

  1. Observation
  • Observe a parent (or caregiver) interacting with their child for at least 30 minutes.
  • This can be in a public setting (e.g., park, store, family gathering) or, if appropriate, within your own family context.
  • Respect privacy: do not include names or identifying details.
  1. Describe the Interaction
  • Summarize what you observed: the behaviors, communication style, emotional tone, and responses between parent and child.
  1. Apply Developmental Concepts
  • Connect your observations to at least two parenting concepts or theories, such as:
  • Baumrinds parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved)
  • Attachment theory (secure, avoidant, ambivalent, disorganized)
  • Cultural influences on parenting
  • Explain why the observed behavior fits the theory or concept.
  1. Reflection
  • Reflect on what this observation suggests about how parenting impacts development.
  • Consider: How might the parents style influence the childs emotional, social, or cognitive growth?
