Life is funnyor at least, contemporary American pop culture
is a doozey. We have an insurance-selling gecko; a toilet-paper-squeezing family of bears; a
cereal-loving tiger; polar bears who guzzle Coke….For this Paper, consider the role of
anthropomorphized animal characters used in advertising. Select an advertising animal character
that I did not mention in this Prompt. Be sure to choose a spokes-animal that is not simply an
actual live animal. In other words, I am not looking for the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales, the
Aflac duck, the Target bulldog, or the Taco Bell chihuahua from a few years back. I am
interested in a drawn/ animated creature whose purpose is to promote a product or an
environmental cause. Though they are based on a real animal species, such spokes-creatures are
given a voice and engage in anthropomorphic behavior.
Research your spokes-animals origins. For instance, what food company or other business
organization created them? What year did they originally appear in ads? What specific product(s)
are they promoting? In what ways do they exhibit anthropomorphism? Describe the spokes-
creature and their sales-pitch in a 3-4-page Paper. Quoting at least 4 sentences per source from:
1) two scholarly articles or books, and 2) information from a company or industry webpage,
explore your characters great appeal and impact on us all. Include an image or two of your
spokes-creature. Also include an MLA-style Works Cited Page.
