National Strategy Background Paper

For this assignment, you will conduct research on the national strategy of the United States and its relationship to strategic competition. The product of your research will be a background paper that covers the following requirements:

1. The National Strategy: Using concepts from the Joint Warfighter module lessons, explain the importance of having a strategy to secure and defend the nation.

2. The Department of Defense: Explain the role of the Department of Defense in achieving national strategic objectives.

3. Strategic Competition: Describe the relationship between the U.S. national strategy and strategic competition.

4. Clarity & Accuracy: The paper must convey your own original thoughts and ideas that are well supported and properly integrated. Support your main points with details, personal examples, credible outside sources, or a combination thereof (as applicable) that are adequate, relevant, and coherent.

5. Format & Mechanics: The paper must meet the following formatting and mechanics requirements:

A. The paper must contain a purpose, outline of main points, and conclusion IAW AFH 33-337, The Tongue and Quill.

B. Explanations must flow logically through main points to the conclusion.

C. The paper must use Times New Roman, 12-point font; 1-inch margins all around; single space line breaks within paragraphs; and double-space line breaks between paragraphs.

D. Page numbers should be used from page 2 onward, placed in the header, flush with the right margin.

E. All other grammar, formatting, mechanics, etc. must be consistent with guidance in AFH 33-337, The Tongue and Quill.

F. Paper should be one to two pages in length, not including the reference page.

G. The reference page must include all sources and be cited according to the Chicago Manual of Style. For the purposes of this paper, social media sites (including Reddit, Facebook, etc.), blogs, and Wikis are not considered credible sources. Consult AFH-33-337, The Tongue and Quill, Ch. 4, Research Your Topic, for further guidance.
