Module 3 Written Assignment: Paper on Population Health Concern
Continuing to build on the work you have done in module 2, write a 46-page paper (not including references) that identifies and analyzes a specific local population health concern which you select. The substantiation of the health concern should draw on data that is specific to your community (where you live or work). The community, for purposes of epidemiologic data, is often defined as a county (the exception being larger cities). This paper will become the basis for the next two written assignments in the course which will explore relevant strategies and advocacy to address the identified concern (modules 5 and 8).
For this assignment, please address the following and use sections here as headings:
Introduction: Clearly state the population health concern you will focus on. Do you identify this concern as a health factor (determinant), or outcome, or both. Please explain. (1 para)
Significance of Concern:
Please introduce/summarize the impact this concern has on well-being and/or on development or exacerbation of other health conditions. [For this paper, please do not expand on the pathophysiology of the condition except where the explanation is necessary to explain relationship with other factors.]
Epidemiology and Equity:
Drawing from at least 3 sources, please describe the epidemiology of this concern on the local/county level, state, and national level. What are the rates or prevalence of the concern? How is the concern distributed (e.g., geographically and across different population groups)? Are there issues of equity in the distribution and/or impact of this concern? Please explain.
Health Determinants and Equity:
Drawing from at least 2 sources, please explore and analyze the inter-relationship of your identified population health concern with structural determinants of health (e.g. policy, health care systems, social and economic structures, environment). How do these factors relate to the demographic, social and economic realities of the local community?
Drawing from at least 2 sources, please explore and analyze the inter-relationship of your identified population health concern with behavioral determinants of health (and note any interplay with structural determinant of health).
Conclusion:
Provide a brief closing summation of the main points of your paper. Please include a statement on why nurses and other health-professionals should be concerned with the particular health concern facing your community.
