Task: Your task is to choose a way to violate a norm and pay close attention to the way that people respond to you (what do they do verbally, non-verbally, and behaviorally). Play close attention to the types of responses you get. Also, pay some attention to your emotions during the whole process (right before, during, & after). You may choose to violate a norm in front of people you know or strangers. You may also work with someone else in the class to violate a norm (but you would write separate papers). However, and this is important, the violation cannot have a direct effect on other people (e.g., making someone else embarrassed or hurt/angry), cannot be something that would get you and/or others in trouble (i.e., legally or interpersonally or in any other way) and cannot disrupt a class. It should be enough of a norm violation that people notice and possibly respond (e.g., facing the wrong way in an elevator), but not so much of a norm violation that anyone around you is offended (e.g., public nudity) or could get hurt (e.g., yelling boo as people round a corner), or inspires any overt passion in any way (e.g., wearing an obscenity shirt), or disrupts any class. I cannot stress enough that the norm needs to be some sort of a violation, but not over the top. If I find you have gone too far you will fail the paper. Also, if you find yourself unable to do the norm violation in the end or that you want to abruptly halt your behavior feel free simply refocus your paper around some of those issues. It is not as important here that you get the psychology exactly right (in fact, I dont want you to do any background research on norms or norm violations). Your grade will be based upon evidence that you thought about the issues involved and whether you responded to each of the questions imbedded in the prompt. Obviously, papers with depth of analysis on the issue will do better than superficial accounts. The paper should be roughly 3-4 double-spaced pages in length. Please do not use any personally identifying information about other people in your paper. If you feel uncomfortable completing the task (or feel that youre making others too uncomfortable), you may stop at any time. If anyone asks you are free to tell them about the assignment that they can contact me at drigotas@jhu.edu with any questions or concerns. Paper Sections: Introduction: I want you to write about the formation of norms (e.g., how do they come about?), their power and purpose (e.g., why do we follow them?), their maintenance (e.g., what happens to norm violators vs. those who follow the norms?), and the general emotional nature of norm-violation in general. Your norm violation: I want you to give details about what you did for a norm violation (e.g., setting, behavior, audience, duration). Again, no personal details of anyone involved. Peoples responses: You also need to give the responses of people witnessing the violation looking for categories of response (behavioral or non-verbal patterns, etc.). Your response to the task: How did you feel about having to do the task while planning it, right before doing it, during, and what did you feel when you finally were able to end it? Explain how these emotions may be linked to norms and norm violations in general. Conclusions: What does your specific experience in norm violation say about the norms in general? the norm is eating without utensils…i got to johns hopkins so like just use dining places with campus and just make stuff up for methodology…follow all the instructions.
