Multicultural Competence in Human Services

This assignment assesses the following Course Outcome:

HN501-5: Evaluate the roles of multiculturalism and diversity as they relate to the history, purpose, and major policies of human services.

For this assignment, you will complete a multicultural self-assessment. Using the results of this self-assessment, you will create a presentation that details your results and how you will utilize these results to enhance your multicultural skills moving forward. Your presentation should make a clear connection between how the strengths and areas for improvement on the self-assessment align with the course objective of evaluating the role of multiculturalism and diversity as it relates to the history, purpose, and major policies of human services.

For this assignment, please include the following:

  • Discuss your scores from the 3 categories: Awareness, Knowledge, and Skills

Slides 3, 4 & 5: Multiculturalism in Practice

  • Briefly define multiculturalism, what it looks like in an agency setting, and what it looks like in practice (i.e., how the professional centers multiculturalism and diversity in their work with clients). You may utilize your text, any reading materials, or educational videos to answer these questions.
  • How has our awareness of diversity and the need for cultural competency changed the way we serve clients in the last 10-15 years?
  • Identify a human services agency policy that addresses multiculturalism and diversity. Evaluate how it addresses multiculturalism and diversity.
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the policy in terms of how well it addresses multiculturalism and diversity?
  • For example, does the policy specifically reach out to diverse populations? Or does it ignore or limit the multicultural dimensions of helping?
  • How does the policy address at least two of the following: social justice principles, systemic or institutional barriers, and inequality and poverty?

  • What recommendations would you make to strengthen your personal responsiveness to inequality, social justice, institutional discrimination, and racism based on your self-assessment and what you found in your own research?

Slide 11: Personal Reflection

  • Discuss what you learned about yourself through the self-assessment process and how your understanding of multiculturalism has changed.

  • Include a minimum of three scholarly, academic sources (with one of these references being the textbook) listed in APA format.

Your assignment should be a PowerPoint presentation with at least 10 slides, not including the title and reference slides.

Your PowerPoint should include the following elements:

  • Title slide: Provide your name, title of assignment, course and section number, and date.
  • Content slides: Answer all the questions, reflecting appropriate personal and professional insights.
  • The assignment must be written in Standard English and demonstrate superior organization, including a highly developed viewpoint and purpose. Your responses should reflect professional writing standards, using proper tone and language. The writing and writing style should be correct, accurate, and reflect knowledge of skills and practice the human services profession.
  • Presentations are visual; therefore, use clear, concise bullet points and avoid crowded slides. You may include the use of graphics and SmartArt to streamline information in a memorable manner. Additionally, images and diagrams are wonderful presentation tools but be sure to include all required citations. Please review the resource for tips and suggestions. Submissions must be in .pptx format and no larger than 40 MB.
  • Note: Visual effects and some dark-colored themes, such as Slate, may prevent Turnitin from fully processing a PowerPoint file and, consequently, from generating a Similarity Report. Review the to ensure a report will be generated.
  • Reference slide: Sources listed in current APA format.
  • Include a minimum of three scholarly or academic sources (with one of these references being the textbook) to support your responses and conclusions.
  • Use Arial or Times New Roman 24-point font.
  • Use current APA formatting and citation style.
