MRKG Discussion HW

A good story can transport you.

The study of consumer behavior is really just about understanding a story: the story of the buyer. Who are they? Why are they spending their money, time and resources on a purchase. How do they come to a decision, and what influenced that decision?

You are going to write a (very) short story, consisting of no more than four paragraphs. Every story has characters, conflict, and resolution. The characters are the people involved. For today, you will have two characters. Conflict is when the characters desires are thwarted in some way, either together or separately. It need not be conflict between the two characters, though it can be. Resolution is how the characters solve the conflict and how they change on the way.

Before you begin writing, answer these questions:

  1. What are your two characters names?
  2. What is their relationship to each other?
  3. Do they have families?
  4. What are their occupations?
  5. What are their favorite sports?

Start your story with the following: [Character 1] and [character 2] stood outside, their breath steaming in the bitter cold and their stomachs growling, trying to decide where to eat.

You can take your story in any direction you wish, but the characters are very hungry and cold, so let them find a place to eat!

When you finish your story, answer the following questions:

  1. What influenced their restaurant decision?
  2. How long did they take to make their decision?
  3. Did they immediately agree on a place, or did they have to discuss?
