That Makes Sense:
One concept that really makes sense to me is the definition of confidence in sport as a multidimensional construct, particularly the distinction between trait sport confidence and state sport confidence. Trait sport confidence refers to a general belief in ones ability across situations, while state sport confidence is more situation-specific and can fluctuate depending on circumstances. I understand how sources of confidencesuch as mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and physiological statescan directly influence performance. For example, repeated successful performances (mastery experiences) logically strengthen an athletes belief in their abilities. This aligns with the idea that confidence is built, not just something you are born with.

One area I am still trying to fully understand is how to accurately measure concentration during sport performance. I understand that concentration involves focusing on relevant cues in the environment while ignoring distractions, and that it includes components like selective attention and attentional control. However, I find it confusing how practitioners can objectively assess whether an athletes attentional focus is truly optimal during competition, especially since attention can shift so quickly.

Previously, I thought confidence was mostly about positive self-talk. This module helped me realize that confidence is more complex and rooted in preparation, past performance, and cognitive appraisal. As a future professional, I would focus more on helping athletes build confidence through structured goal-setting, deliberate practice, and simulation training rather than just motivational speeches. Similarly, I would incorporate concentration strategies like pre-performance routines and cue words to help athletes maintain focus under pressure.
