Discussion: Is segregation a problem?

Discussion prompt:

This week’s presentation talks about the problems of concentrated poverty and neighborhood effects, and the Excluded chapters you read this week discusses problems that arise when people are shut out of affluent neighborhoods. Many people, however, feel very attached to their neighborhoods and value the connections they make in their communities, even if those communities may not look great to outsiders. If you were a policymaker in a city with neighborhoods of racial and/or income segregation, would you suggest policies that give people the opportunity to move out of those neighborhoods to reap the benefits of greater integration? Or would you push for greater investment in such neighborhoods so that residents could stay there but enjoy better services and amenities? Be sure to cite our class readings and/or presentation in your post.
