Mini Course: LMS Creation Assignment

Mini Course: LMS Creation Assignment Instructions

Overview

Student satisfaction and whether distance learning techniques can provide equivalent learning as face-to-face instruction are two main areas of concern when implementing distance learning (Moore & Diehl, 2018). It is important to understand that distance education varies in effectiveness just as traditional face-to-face learning (Moore & Diehl, 2018). Creating an organized, cohesive online course is extremely important (Nilson & Goodson, 2018). When creating a mini course such as this one, it is important to make sure all your course elements align (Nilson & Goodson, 2018). Nilson & Goodson (2018) state that if you can take any activity in your course (assignment, assessment, discussion, etc.) and align it with your course objectives, you can improve learning by as much as fourfold.

Instructions

For this assignment, you will use the Learning Management System you selected in the Mini Course: LMS Selection Assignment to create a mini-course for one of the following audiences, along with a corresponding topic. You need to use the ISTE Educator Designer Standards (5) as a guide while you create this course. Access the ISTE Standards for Educators link provided with this assignment.

The learner audience for your mini course will fall into one of the three categories:

1. K-12 or Higher Ed. Students. For this learning audience option, you will build your mini-course using content that already exists from a unit you have taught on a critical topic. The mini-course you create will be used as part of a blended/flipped classroom approach.

2. Adult learners from your work setting. For this learning audience option, you are choosing a topic that you can use for training purposes at your current work setting.

3. Adult learners in the general population. If neither of the above two scenarios fits your current setting, you may use a simulated audience.

Learning Management System

The LMS used may be school-managed with guest access capability or it may be open-source, utilizing an LMS such as Edmodo, Google Classroom, SeeSaw, Canvas, or Moodle. Other LMS options are permitted, as approved by your instructor.

Please refer to the course textbooks and resources, as they can be very valuable to you as you create your mini course.

Below are the directions for each section of the mini course:

Introduction Page:

In this section, you will want to create a page that serves as an introduction to your topic. You will need to include the title of the course, 3-5 clearly stated course objectives, and at least one image that supports the topic of your course.

Lesson Pages:

In this section, you will create 1-2 lesson pages within the online Learning Management System. You will need to make sure your content is in short, manageable chunks, so the content is not overwhelming to the learner. You do not want to have too much text altogether. Think of how you can break up your topic into these short sections.

Authentic Learning Activity:

In this section, you will find an activity that provides a real-world application for learners. ISTE Standards (2016) describe an authentic learning activity as a learning experiences that have value or resonance beyond the classroom/academics.

Content Videos:

In this section, you will create two content instructional screencasts that align with your course objectives using a presentation tool such as PowerPoint, Sway, Prezi, or Google Slides. Each presentation is to be no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length. These screencasts must only record your computer screen. Some free video recording tools include Camtasia, ScreencastPal, and Screencastify. Links to these applications have been provided in the resources area of the Mini Course: LMS Creation Assignment page. You do not have to use these three applications if you have another one you would like to use. You will need to embed the videos into the LMS.

At least one of the instructional screencasts must utilize EdPuzzle, incorporating 3-5 questions embedded within your video. A link to EdPuzzle has been provided in the resources area of this assignment. Please watch the How to Embed Questions to an Edpuzzle Video presentation in the Learn items for Module 5 to find how to create a video with questions embedded. You will need to include the text copy of your script under each videos location in the course.

Links:

You will need to provide at least two links to other websites that provide more information about your topic and align with your course objectives.

Printable Handout:

You will need to provide a printable handout activity that is designed to help the learner achieve at least one of the course objectives. This handout needs to be in PDF form.

Discussion Forum:

You will need to create an online discussion within your LMS that goes along with your course topic and aligns with your course objectives. Please make sure to provide clear instructions within your online discussion.

Assessment:

You will need to create a 15-20 question assessment that is scorable within your LMS. Please ensure that your assessment accurately evaluates the learners knowledge of the course objectives. Use a variety of questions such as true/false, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and matching.
