Manual and Digital Navigation

For this activity, you will put together a dead reckoning plan in accordance with the Fundamentals of Flight and Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge textbooks.

You are tasked with picking up and delivering a high-profile client and flying from either Denver or Colorado Springs to one of two locations to the west. You will need to stay below 10,000 feet as much as possible. Consider FAR 91.211 in your development. You will travel at 120 knots and have approximately two hours of flight time before needing fuel. Expect ground times of 15 minutes at full RPM. Choose and complete one of the two scenarios below using the and flight legs on maps.

Scenario 1: Depart Denver, KBJC (NOTE: Due to passenger medical conditions, remain below 10,000′ MSL as much as possible.)

  1. Drop PAX at Minton Park in Empire, Colorado
  2. Pickup in Nederland, Colorado at the west end of Barker Reservoir
  3. Full stop at Boulder Municipal, KBDU

Scenario 2: Depart Colorado Springs, KCOS

  1. Pickup at the field just southeast of the intersection of Highways 31 and 24 in Florissant, Colorado
  2. Drop off at Cripple Creek, Colorado
  3. Back to Colorado Springs, drop off at N38.745832, W105.158638 at a mine near Cripple Creek, Colorado. You will pickup a heavy load that will not allow you to fly above 10,000 feet, but you will be able to conduct a descending takeoff and then get safely to lower altitudes.
  4. Return to KCOS to drop the load off

Exercise Guidelines

Using the (manual) Dead Reckoning technique and the digital planner (if desired), produce a TDH card for the manual portion and screenshots with dead reckoning details on the digital legs. You may choose to use altitude profile functions that exist in certain programs to assist with the altitude restrictions.
