This assignment will be submitted to TurnitinTM.Instructions

This is associated with LO 1 and 5.

Resources You Need to Complete the Assignment:

  • At least one outside scholarly article of your choice. (scholarly sources include peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, and reputable news sources such as New York Times, Newsweek, Time Magazine, Forbes, or Wall Street Journal).

Purpose of this Assignment: Submission of this assignment is required for course completion. This assignment will help you connect classical conditioning, and operant conditioning to your own life. In doing so, it will facilitate your comprehension of these concepts.

What to Do to Complete this Assignment: Essay and Video/ID Verification

  • Write an essay of how each type of learning relates to your life. In addition, submit a video of you explaining either classical or operant conditioning as it relates to your life. Submit a copy of your student ID or State Issued ID for proof of identity.
  • You MUST include properly formatted in-text citations throughout the paper and end-of-paper references/bibliography to connect to the required resources used for support. As a reminder, this is a graded part of the paper. Failure to include these elements in your paper will result in a loss of points.
  • For more information on how to properly format in-text and end-of-paper references/bibliography, please refer to the section found in the course resources tab.

Formatting your Writing Assignment:

  • Introduction: Write what Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning mean to you in your own words.
  • Paragraph 2: Write a paragraph explaining an example of classical conditioning in your own life.
  • Identify something you learned through classical conditioning. (Remember, this will be something that is an automatic reaction.)
  • Describe what you learned. For example, a cat who has been abused may flinch whenever someone nearby raises their hand. The cat learned to react that way.
  • Describe how you learned this automatic reaction and label each part (i.e., UCS, UCR, CS, CR) of the classical conditioning process. Continuing the above example, when the cat was hit (UCS) it would have curled up to protect its vital organs (UCR). The cat didnt learn that behavior; its just instinct. The cat learned that when a person raises their hand above the cat that person is about to hit the cat. That makes the raised hand a CS because it indicates the UCS (hitting) is coming. So now the cat prepares for being hit by cowering when it sees a raised hand (CS). That makes cowering the CR because it is a reaction to the CS.
  • Paragraph 3: Write a paragraph explaining an example of operant conditioning in your own life.
  • Identify something you learned through operant conditioning. Remember, this will be something for which you were either rewarded or punished as a consequence of the behavior.
  • Describe what you learned. For example, a puppy may learn not to jump on the furniture because its owner squirts it with water whenever it jumps on the furniture.
  • Describe how you learned to do or not do the behavior and indicate whether you learned through positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, or negative punishment. Continuing the above example, when the puppy jumps on the furniture it gets squirted with water, which it doesnt like. Eventually, the puppy associates getting squirted with jumping on the furniture and stops doing it to avoid getting squirted. This would be an example of positive punishment. Its positive because squirting the puppy is adding something to the situation. Its punishment because the puppy doesnt like the consequence and so it stops the behavior.
  • Paragraph 4: Write a paragraph explaining an example of observational learning in your own life.
  • Identify something you learned through observational learning. Remember, this will be something you learned to do by watching someone else do it. Possibly also you would have seen that person get rewarded or punished for the behavior. For example, an octopus may learn to open a jar to get food by watching another octopus do it.
  • Describe how you learned to do or not do the behavior. For example, the octopus in the above example was unable to open a jar to get to food. Then it was placed in a situation where it could watch another octopus access the food (a reward) by opening the jar. The octopus watched once or twice and then imitated what it had seen. It opened the jar and accessed the food.

Required Video/ID Verification: Create a video explaining your example of either classical or operant conditioning.

  • Choose between classical conditioning or operant conditioning and prepare some notes to make a video explaining the example.
  • Make a short video (3-5 minutes) of yourself explaining your example of either classical conditioning or operant conditioning. Be sure to use the correct terminology. Try your best to explain to the camera using your notes rather than reading exactly what you already wrote.
  • Identity Verification
  • Take a photo of your student ID or state-issued ID and submit it to this assignment folder. You can cover your address, ID number, or other identifying information with a post it note or sticker, but your face and name should be clear. (Note: )
  • Recording & Submitting Your Video
  • Your video should be submitted through YuJa. You can record directly in YuJa or upload a previously recorded video (i.e., with your phone, tablet, etc.) to YuJa.
  • Please refer to the instructions.
  • Please do not use the “Add File” option for your video file. Your video submission should be done through YuJa. Alternatively, you may upload it to YouTube and provide a link to the video. Instructions for using YouTube are also included in the above link.

Important: Your face and name must be clearly visible in your ID, and your face must be visible in your video.

Please refer to the Major Project for more specific criteria to attain the maximum essay score.

Final Step: Submit your Essay, video, and ID in the dropbox.

File Submissions: Please submit your assignment as a .docx file.
