Youve now read Chapters 5-8 from the Kaiser & Rasminsky (2017), watched the assigned video, and explored additional articles. The authors emphasize the importance of prevention of challenging behaviors through the building of positive, trusting, consistent relationships. Based on what you’ve learned, please choose one of the following assignments to complete for this module: Option 1: Classroom Strategies Showcase The environment you create and the relationships you build will all help determine child outcomes in the program. Using what you have learned from Chapters 5, 7, and 8 in the Kaiser, et al., (2017) text, demonstrate how you have used or would use relationship-based prevention strategies in the children’s environment to promote pro-social behaviors. You will create labeled slides (PowerPoint or similar) depicting portions of the program environment that best illustrate your practices and strategies. Then you will write a 23-page APA reflective essay considering the following: What strategy did you choose when setting up the environment and why? Describe how these strategies are used in your program. Evaluate the effectiveness of each of the strategies you chose. Why do you think they were effective in promoting pro-social behaviors? What, if any, were not effective and why? Based on your learning in this module, what changes or additions would you make to these strategies? The following are a list of examples you might consider or use your own ideas: Personal and group spaces for children: – How do children know what is expected in those spaces? How can they identify which are group or personal spaces? (p. 152 in the text) Child Display: What dedicated space do you use for displaying children’s artwork and family photos? How does this help build self-identity, relationships, and pro-social behaviors? (p. 153 in the text) How does your environment support child-led play? What relationship-based strategies have you used to help children to know you support their paly? (p. 160-163 in the text) Option 2: Reflective Essay on Culturally Responsive Classrooms Children learn best when they are in an environment that reflects, supports, and celebrates who they are and where they come from. We may do a great job in representing multiple cultures or race, but are we also representing non-traditional gender roles or age in a positive, affirming way? Using Chapter 6 in your Kaiser, et al., (2017) text and the following article, write a reflective essay using the three guiding questions from the reading: Creating a Culturally Responsive Early Childhood Classroom (Todd, R., 2021, Edutopia). Who are the children in your program? Who do your children see in your program? (How are the reflected in the environment?) How can you move further towards culturally responsive teaching in your program? Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length, use APA style to cite your sources and consider the following when responding to the above questions. Describe how you learn about the children and families in your program? Are your strategies effective or are there other ways you would like to try? Examine and analyze your environment for ways that the children are represented. Are there any children that are underrepresented? Does your environment include positive examples of non-traditional gender roles, race, age, ability, and culture? Create a plan for how you would change or modify your culturally responsive teaching practices. Are there activities you would add? Materials you would change or add? Reflect on your overall culturally responsive teaching practices and how it impacts the children you care for in your program.
