Literacy Block Design MMS 550

English language arts can be challenging for many students, often due to difficulties with reading comprehension, written expression, and/or speaking and listening skills. It is important to design the literacy block to meet the specific areas in need of improvement so the appropriate interventions can be implemented to thoughtfully differentiate instruction for students to develop necessary skills.

Part 1: Literacy Block

Grade band K-3 to focus on for this assignment and outline a 60-90-minute literacy block for a classroom of students with mild to moderate disabilities. Include the following:

  • Essential Components: Such as shared reading, whole group explicit instruction/modeling, guided reading/small group instruction, writing instruction, independent reading, assessment/progress monitoring, intervention, etc.
  • Time: Amount of time spent on each component of the literacy block.
  • Skills: The skills that will be focused on in each essential component (phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, etc.).
  • Activities: Teaching and learning activities that would be part of each essential component.
  • Accommodations/Modifications: Accommodations/modifications that can be made to the general education curriculum during each essential component to address skills and strategies that students with exceptionalities need to access the core curriculum, meet individualized learning needs, and function successfully within a variety of contexts.
  • Class Configurations: Whole group, small group, independent activity, etc. for each essential component.

Part 2: Classroom Support Instructions

Following the literacy block outline, write specific instructions (no more than one page) for support staff, such as a paraprofessional, on how they should support learning and data collection during each component of the literacy block. This can be a bulleted list and should include an easy to complete data collection tool that can be completed by the support staff throughout the block.

Part 3: Reflection

In 250-500 words, reflect on the following:

  • Describe how flexible grouping can be used to meet the needs of individuals and groups during the literacy block.
  • Explain how you would modify this literacy block for a hybrid and an online classroom environment.
