Lily and her relationship

Lilly is a 40-year-old Caucasian female who has been married to Jacob for 15 years. They have three daughters, ages 14, 11, and 9, much to the dismay of Jacob, who had always hoped for a son. Jacob works full time at a local factory, and Lilly recently started a part-time job at the local mall when their youngest child started third grade. All of the girls participate in sports and do well in school. They live in a home that they own in a middle-class neighborhood close to school where the girls can walk to school together. The 14-year-old daughter will start high school next year.

Current Problems

Lilly went to her physician complaining of being tired and depressed. Her doctor noticed bruises on her neck and upper arms in differing stages of healing. He asked her how these bruises happened, and Lilly said that she bumps into things a lot. Then she started crying in the office and said that her husband grabs her and chokes her sometimes. The doctor reported this to the police and referred her to the battered womens shelter hotline and walk-in center.

The police visited Lilly and asked about the bruises. She said it was no big deal and that sometimes Jacob just gets frustrated because she doesnt have the house clean and the girls can be loud. She said it was her fault and doesnt want Jacob to get into trouble. The police present the case to the district attorneys office, and they call Lilly. She refuses to press charges, so they drop the case. They refer her to a domestic violence counselor, Shari.

Lilly goes to an appointment with Shari, who is able to identify the marital pattern for the past 15 years. Evidently, Lilly and Jacob go through periods where everything is great and they are very much in love. However, Lilly did tell her that Jacob has a bad temper and gets stressed out all the time. He gets so mad he has punched holes in the wall. Luckily, he never takes it out on the girls, but he does choke Lilly and squeeze Lilly, and has kicked Lilly. Lilly has never thought of leaving him because she believes the girls need a father.

Explore the barriers that prevent Lilly from seeking help and leaving the abusive relationship, including fear of retaliation, concerns about her children, and societal pressures to maintain family unity. Discuss the role of victim-blaming attitudes and internalized guilt in perpetuating these barriers.
