After watching the and reading the Law360 Expert Analysis article on how to manage cyber risk, do the following:
- Conduct Internet research and identify a company, other than Colonial Pipeline, that was recently held for Cyber-ransom of any kind.
- Identify the company, why it was held ransom & what could/should have prevented it.
- Did the company pay a ransom?
- Who was responsible for the decision to pay/not pay?
- Was the decision to pay ethical? (To pay or not to pay)

- One simple search on cyber-ransom and hundreds of articles show up. The company I am choosing is Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. This incident occurred from January 4th to January 8th, 2024. The group that claimed responsibility was the radar threat group. It took the company until September 15, 2024, to confirm that social security numbers, drivers licenses, and State ID numbers, passports, financial data, medical information, and clinical photographs were all taken.
- Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (LIPSG) could have made sure that it had adequate security measures in place to protect clients’ sensitive information. They should have had training on things like phishing, baited emails, and general cybersecurity
- One website says that the ransom was paid, while another says it was not. A second hacker company called ALPHV Threat Group was said to be working together with The Radar Threat Group (RTG). RTG claims that ALPHV was paid but did not receive its portion from ALPHV. A Second threat was then made by RTG to prevent the data from being leaked, and it was then seized by the FBI.
- If it was paid, then it was more than likely decided by a board vote. Gary Blank is the current Chairman of the Board.
- One source says that the ransom amount was $500,000USD. If they did pay it, then it would show that it is easy to push these companies into a corner once you get certain information. On the other hand, it is extremely hard to judge just how valuable 161 thousand different files can be when they can destroy lives.

- Hello Class,
- It is astonishing to see all of the different cyber ransom attacks on companies over the years. I had no idea that there were actual formed cyber groups that do these things on a regular basis. Today I am discussing the cyber ransom attack on JBS USA, a meat processing company that supplies approximately 1/5th of the meat to the entire world. Although it is not clear on the motive behind why they were chosen for this attack, there were still measures that could have been taken to minimize the threat of an attack happening. The company did end up paying the ransom. They paid $11 Million in bitcoin to the cyber group known as “REvil”. It was a group decision by the top representatives in the company to pay the ransom, but it still came with a lot of criticism. I agree with the criticism surrounding the decision to pay it, as many were saying that paying the ransom only incentivizes the group or other groups to attack more in the future. It is the same as rewarding a kid for bad behavior, they will just be more inclined to do it again if it worked out in their favor the first time. It also raises concerns on why they paid the ransom to keep information of getting out. Almost as if they are hiding information that they did not want the public to know about how they operate and what all goes into the meat processing industry that ultimately ends up in millions of Americans homes.
