According to the National Institutes of Health, implicit bias is a form of bias that occurs automatically and unintentionally, that nevertheless affects judgments, decisions, and behaviors (n.d.). Everyone has implicit or unconscious bias, but it is not the same as explicit or conscious bias, which is associated with racism, sexism, and other biases. Studies have shown that implicit bias can negatively affect people and decisions in the workplacefrom hiring and promotion decisions to interactions with customers and colleagues. Awareness is a good first step towards managing and changing your biases.
