Question 1: While female offenders in general are often sentenced less harshly than males, some

theorize that this might not be the case for certain offenses. One of the largest examples of this

would be child abuse and neglect.

First, use the focal concerns theory to describe why it might be the case that women would be

sentenced more harshly than men for the criminal offense of child abuse and neglect.

theorized relationship?

Question 2: There are currently 9 states across the U.S. that have prison nursery programs. These

programs allow babies inside of a prison for 30 days to 30 months. This is meant to establish a

connection between the mother and the child. After reading the article below, and using our

discussion of special considerations for female offenders, describe why programs like these

can be beneficial. Be sure to also describe issues related to the implemented and running of such

programs.
