Below are two hypothetical property offenses, one committed by a male and one by a female

(The scenarios were created using generative A.I. software)

1. A woman in her late 20s works part-time retail and is experiencing financial strain. Over

several months, she takes small amounts of merchandise from her workplacecosmetics

and clothingand occasionally returns items without receipts for store credit.

2. A man in his early 20s breaks into parked cars in a residential neighborhood late at night,

stealing electronics and valuables. He sells the items quickly for cash.

Use Steffensmeier and Allans gendered theory of female offending to explain each of the two

scenarios. You should include a discussion of how each of the key elements makes sense of the

crime committed by the male and female: organization of gender, biological factors, context of

offending, motivation for crime and criminal opportunities.
