Purpose
- Synthesize and apply knowledge of lifespan development by creating a narrated PowerPoint that explores a specific topic or theory in depth.
Assessment aligns with course objectives 1, 2, and 10, and general education competency: communication.
Instructions
Create an approximately 5-minute narrated PowerPoint on a specific topic or theory related to development. This allows you to demonstrate your understanding through visual aids, narration, and interactive elements.
- Select a specific topic or theory related to development that interests you (e.g., Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, Erikson’s psychosocial stages, attachment theory, language acquisition, successful aging, cognitive development in aging, adolescent storm and stress, adolescent identity development and adolescent egocentrism, death and dying, marriage and divorce, work and retirement, etc.). If you have another topic idea, please contact your instructor to see if it would work well for the final project.
- Research and gather relevant information, examples, and visuals (images, videos, diagrams) to illustrate the key concepts and principles of your chosen topic/theory.
- Create a narrated PowerPoint (approximately 5-minutes) that effectively communicates your understanding of the topic/theory through:
- Visual aids (slides, images, diagrams, animations) to represent key ideas and concepts
- Narration or voiceover to explain the content
- Interactive elements (quizzes, activities, simulations) to engage the audience and reinforce learning
- Ensure your presentation has a clear structure, with an introduction that provides context, main body that explores the topic/theory in depth, and a conclusion that summarizes the key takeaways.
- Incorporate relevant examples, case studies, or real-world applications to demonstrate how the theory/concepts relate to actual development and experiences.
- Include proper citations and references for any sources used in your research and presentation.
- Consider adding multimedia elements like videos, audio clips, or interactive simulations to enhance the presentation and make it more engaging for the audience.
- Practice your presentation, ensuring smooth transitions, clear narration, and effective use of multimedia elements.
Tips
- You can use
- , built into Canvas, to record your audio and your screen (MCC Videos, 2021).
- Here is a YouTube tutorial on
- (How to Canvas, 2021).
- Reminder: you can , including PowerPoint to your device for free using your MCC student email account.
- If you’re sharing a PowerPoint online or Google Slides file, make sure you’ve enabled permissions, so your instructor can view your file.
- Design tip: don’t overwhelm your slides with text or make the text too small. The text on your slides should highlight the important information. A good rule of thumb is the 7 x 7 rule: try not to include more than 7 words on a line and more than 7 lines of text on a slide.
- Presentation tip: don’t read off your slides. Your narration should expand on the key pieces of information in your slides.
