Hi, Below is the assignment: I would like for you to write the bibliography first (details below) using this topic: How Ezra maintained Hebrew knowledge during the Return to Zion era. Then I would like for you to complete the writing assignment aspect of it.(Details below) Please make them seperately. For the first of three research/writing assignments for this course, you will be addressing an aspect of language culture related to Hebrew in the ancient world. For this assignment, you are asked to assemble a bibliography on the topic. More on that below. First, to describe what the writing assignment will be: WRITING ASSIGNMENT: In this course, we try to touch on five central questions, also listed on the syllabus: What does it mean that Hebrew is a sacred language? How does language use influence and get influenced by group identity and national politics? To what extent was Hebrew a dead language after it stopped being spoken, and what does that tell us about its later revival? How do custodians of a language maintain language knowledge and use when the language is under threat of extinction or forgottenness? Who decides what form of a language is the standard or correct one, and how do they make those decisions? Your task is to think about how one of these five questions was asked, answered, addressed, dealt with,(You can choose), or otherwise approached at some point, by some person or group of people, in the ancient world (for our purposes, until after the Bar Kochba Revolt in 135 CE). Within those confines, you are free to focus on a topic or time period you are most interested in researching and writing about. BIBLIOGRAPHY: For this assignment, you must do two tasks. First, you should assemble a list of 68 sources, following the guidelines listed below. Please look for a number of sources that you can use to address your topic. You can start with encyclopedias such as the Jewish Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Judaica, or various biblical encyclopedia, and their references. You can also look at the References section of a wikipedia article, and see if those sources are peer-reviewed. Finally, internet searches for articles are helpful. Start with searching in Google Scholar, and then try resources offered through the library, such as Rambi. The librarians are eager to help you use these resources and get access to the articles you find there. Second, you should describe how you found your sources–for example, by searching through references in encyclopedias, searching on RAMBI, browsing a library shelf, asking a librarian, etc. This should be a few sentences describing your search process. I am not looking for any given process–do not be concerned if the way you found articles appears “lazy” or as a shortcut– the idea is that if your bibliography ends up having some research “holes,” (Also see the guidelines below for another potential aspect to this description) Important Bibliography Guidelines You should cite using the University of Chicago Citation Style, 17th edition At least half of your sources must not be encyclopedia entries. At least one of your sources must be (from) either a physical book or an e-book also available as a physical book, still in copyright. At least one of your sources must be from 2024 or later if possible. If none is available or relevant enough for your topic, please include a few sentences describing the search process you used, and how you came to the decision that those sources are irrelevant. You do not need to travel to the Bodleian Library in Oxford to conduct this research. Checking a few potentially relevant articles from a search result and deciding against them is good enough. I have written that this shoul dbe done with 7 pages. 3 for the Bibliography:(siting and explaining the siting) and 4 for the written assignment.
