Paper 2
Topic:
Ata-Malik Juvaini in his The History of the World-Conqueror has the difficult task of reconciling the
Mongol conquests with an Islamic interpretation of history. In particular, he provides a positive
interpretation of the career of Chinggis Khan, the founder of the Mongol world empire and the ancestor
of Juvainis employers the Ilkhans. Given that at Juvainis time the Ilkhans were still non-Muslims and
non-monotheists, how does he accomplish this task? It may be useful to think of Juvainis work in
comparison or contrast with Ibn Shaddads more conventional Islamic portrayal of Salah al-Din.
