Adaptations to living at high elevations, including metabolic rates, respiration rates, and hemoglobin concentrations, are shared by many Indigenous communities. These traits are heritable and passed on to the next generation. Athletes train at high elevations to reap the benefits of these adaptations, even in the short term. But it makes some people sick.
