Health policy and law

The purpose of this assignment is to gain some real-world/practical experience with the health policy and law process by viewing a public meeting and summarizing it in a report or giving an in-class presentation. There are many weekly or monthly forums and meetings hosted as town halls or meetings of city councils, public advocacy organizations, and interest groups. A list of possible meetings in posted on Canvas; feel free to look for other sites. Each student will be required to attend one public meeting of their choice that aligns with a policy or legal issue, either in-person or remotely. This meeting should ideally be attended in real-time. It does not necessarily need to address a health policy or law, but it should involve a health determinant (such as education, immigration, housing, employment, criminal justice, etc.) Writing Assignment: The summary will be a 3 -5 page double-spaced report of the meeting. The first half is a synopsis of the meeting. The second half is a summary of the issue that the organization wants to address, which should include all of the following: Identification of the organization that hosted the meeting, the date/time, and the purpose of the meeting. Description of topics covered on the agenda, who attended and participated, and setting. Students overall impressions of the meeting (feel free to use first person) An issue statement (if the meeting covers more than one different issue or topic, please select just one to focus on for this paper) Background information about the issue, including the roles of government, organizations, communities, and/or individuals, with appropriate citations. Description of policy/legal recommendation(s) offered by the organization or governing body. Your opinions and reflections on their decision and recommendations Your alternative solutions to the problem not addressed by the governing body (consider social, political, legal, and/or economic perspectives) Implications for health policy and/or health law (including relevant organization, delivery, and financing of health services across a range of contexts, populations, and/or settings) If you do not obtain enough information about the issue or the background from the meeting, you may need to do extra research to find supporting documentation in the literature. The write-up should be double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, 12-point font, and page numbers. A title page is not necessary, but do not forget to at least provide a title, name, and date on your submission. Unnecessary line breaks will not be considered to meet the required minimum length. Include citations using APA style. You are required to use headings in writing your paper (see rubric). The grading rubric for this assignment is located below. Please review the rubric in detail prior to writing your assignment. Please refer to the following for public meeting ideas, although you are not required to identify a meeting from this list: State of Oregon Public Meetings Oregon Health Authority Public Meetings Multnomah County Public Health Advisory Boards Metro Public Meetings City of Portland Public Meetings Multnomah County Commission Public Meetings
