Glucose Methodology Comparison and Recommendation

Instructions

Your hospital has decided to open a new Diabetes Management Clinic. The administration is trying to decide which glucose testing method to implement for routine patient monitoring. Two options are under consideration:

  • Glucose oxidase method
  • Hexokinase method

You, the clinical laboratory technologist, have been asked to evaluate both methods and provide a recommendation. The clinic expects to process ~100 patient samples per week.

Assignment Instructions

Prepare a short presentation (57 slides) or a 23 page written report that:

  1. Describes each method (principle of the test, how it works).
  2. Lists the pros and cons of each method, including:
  • Specificity and sensitivity
  • Interferences (e.g., uric acid, ascorbic acid, hemolysis, lipemia, bilirubin)
  • Cost and feasibility for ~100 patients/week
  • Automation potential and throughput
  1. Recommends one method as the best fit for the diabetes clinic.
  • Justify your recommendation with scientific evidence.
  • Consider patient volume, accuracy, cost, and clinical reliability.
  1. Cite at least 23 scholarly/credible references (e.g., textbooks, CLSI guidelines, peer-reviewed articles, reputable laboratory references).
