Interview an individual with professional expertise or lived experience related to genetic technologies.
Possible interviewees:
- A individual involved with genetics.
- A person with a genetic disorder
- An ethics committee member
- A parent who used or considered prenatal genetic screening
- A healthcare provider who orders genetic tests
- A nurse or healthcare professional who is involved with application of genetic and ethics (ie. Maternity office, Labor and delivery, NICU, PICU)
Key Points for Your Interview:
- Write about the person you are interviewing. What is their role in genetics, ethics. How does does this relate to the ethical principles?
- Their personal stake in genetic technologies (professional role, lived experience, etc.)
- Two ethical dilemmas they have encountered or are concerned about
- A time their perspective changed or was challenged
- What they wish the public better understood about genetic technologies
Part B: Analysis and Reflection
Write a 3 page paper that: (Total 5 pages including cover sheet and reference sheet)
- Documents your process : How did you find your interviewee? What challenges did you face in setting up the interview? Why did you choose this person?
- Presents the interview findings : What did you learn? Present your interviewee’s perspective thoroughly using direct quotes and specific examples they shared. What was their most compelling insight?
- Identifies and analyzes ethical tensions : Highlights a meaningful ethical tension representing genuine conflicts when applying ethical principles, morality, or ethical values.
- Develops your own position : After hearing this perspective, where do you stand? Your position should show how your thinking was influenced, or challenged (not just confirmed) by the interview. Your answer should engage with your interviewee’s perspective, even if you disagree.
