Looking at the topic of gender, we have seen how people’s views of gender, gender norms, gender expectations, and etcetera vary. Although each sociological perspective has interesting things to say about the topic, Symbolic Interactionism (SI) offers a particular strength in how gender is defined and responded to by us.
For this DB:
- Make a post about how SI explains our understanding of gender and what gender means for us.
- Look at the major institutions/topics covered in the chapter (that are not included in the lecture) and discuss how our understanding of gender is shaped by that topic (e.g. mass media, family, etc.)
- Offer an example of how that topic/institution has tried to reshape the views of gender/gender expectations. Is it effective?
- Offer an example about what else could be done to reshape gender norms/expectations through that topic.
Remember that we are studying sociological views on gender. Be respectful and kind, and professional!
Your response should reflect a clear understanding of the theory and the topic/institution’s influence over defining gender.
