Formal Paper 1 In our last unit, we have read several stories and essays and with special attention to the theme of gender norms and the dynamics between men and women, whether it be Girl by Jamaica Kincaid or How to date a Browngirl… by Junot Diaz. Non-fiction pieces include: Bros Before Hos: the Guy Code by Michael Kimmel, Devor’s “Gender Blending and The Gender Blur by Blum. Your assignment for this essay is to use this theme of gender norms as a focus for your analysis of two of the readings from this unit (one of which has to be a short story). What commentary or message about gender do the authors seem to be suggesting through their stories and essays? How do they encourage or influence you to think about gender norms and their impact? One of the most important things to remember is that your argument must address all parts of the prompt throughout the body of your essay. Support each of your assertions with relevant evidence from both texts. Use at least 5 quotes (3 of which should be from your story. At least 2 of your quotes should be paraphrased). Each body paragraph should have no fewer than 1-2 quotes. Your analysis should be at least as long as the length of your quote. Ultimately, your objective is to synthesize your evidence around your theme and to present it in a logical way. Synthesis is not a summary or review, but rather an integration of your sources to help support your argument.
