Flexible Assignment Possibilities: You will be completing 3 of the assignments below based on the due dates indicated on the calendar below. You have the freedom to choose your favorite assessments! Short Reflection: What is your favorite monster? (1-2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font). Every society including American culture is replete with various types of monsters. What is your favorite monster? Why? What can we learn about ourselves and how we engage with others and the world by exploring the symbolism of this monster? Why are many people frightened by this monster? What can we discover about American culture by examining your favorite monster? Short Reflection: Rehabilitating a Monster. (1-2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) Identify someone or a group of people (e.g., The Central Park Five) who was/were victimized by the rhetoric of monstrosity. How was this image of monstrosity conceived and perpetuated by the media, social networks, political leaders, celebrities, etc.? What can we learn from this injustice the next time that we read about or see a monster on our television, smartphone, or tablet screens? Short-Reflection: Make a Monster. (1-2 pages, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) Create your own monster! In the first paragraph or two, provide a detailed description of your monster. What are its physical characteristics? Does your monster have a name? Does your monster have a backstory? Where did it originate? I would like to be able to visualize your monster in my head! Monstrous Transformation Art Project: Create a piece of art that represents the transformation of a character into a monster. This could be a series of drawings, paintings, or even a sculpture. Monsters in Pop Culture Podcast: Create a podcast episode discussing how monsters are portrayed in current pop culture (films, TV shows, social media, etc.). You can interview classmates or experts, discuss trends, and analyze societal perceptions of monsters today.
