Variable List for Dataset
Instructions: You will choose variables that interest you from the following list of variables that were collected from a study about communication during relationship breakups. Your goal is to choose variables that are the correct level of measurement for the tests that you will run for the final presentation, including descriptive statistics, an independent samples-test, a oneway ANOVA, and a bivariate correlation. You will use the ‘Results Summary Worksheet to help you select the correct types of variables for each test and to help guide you as you run the analyses and interpret the results.
- Categorical variables
- Sex (2 groups) (Nom)
- Ethnicity (6 groups) (Nom)
- Responsibility for the breakup (ordinal) (Ord)
- Breakup initiator (2 groups) (nom)
- Medium used for breakup (4 groups) Nom
- Number of interactions to accomplish breakup (ord)
- Scale variables
- Peak relationship satisfaction before breakup (Int)
- Peak commitment before breakup (Int)
- Age (Ratio)
- Time since breakup in months (ratio)
- Length of relationship (ratio)
- Breakup tone: hostile-friendly (Int)
- Breakup tone: closed-open (Int)
- Breakup tone: deceptive-honest (Int)
- Breakup tone: blame-no blame (Int)
- Breakup tone: no apologies-regret expressed (Int)
- Forgiveness towards partner (Int)
Instructions
- Part 1: Results Summary Assignment/’worksheet’
- Part 2: In a single excel file, compute the results for your 4 major areas of the project.
- Run each set of tests in a different worksheet of the same file:
- Worksheet 1: run central tendency and variability stats for 5 variables and generate one graph to accompany the results
- Worksheet 2: run independent samples t-test and generate one graph to accompany the results
- Worksheet 3: run oneway ANOVA and generate one graph to accompany the results
- Worksheet 4: run correlation and generate a scatterplot
- Helpful reminder: Make sure that your analyses and the graph/chart you created are all visible on each sheet
POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
- The presentation will be 2-4 minutes in length
- You will create 4 graphs or charts in Excel to help explain the results in your presentation
- 1 graph or chart for sample description
- 1 graph or chart for your t-test result
- 1 graph or chart for your ANOVA result
- 1 scatterplot for your correlation result
- You will record your presentation using Zoom so that you can show your powerpoint presentation and yourself presenting simultaneously.
- Zoom instructions: When using zoom, you will click the ‘share’ button and then choose layout that shows your screen and yourself at the same time.
- You will adjust the two views so that you can be seen in the lower right corner of the screen throughout your presentation.
- Use of notes/note cards: You are allowed to have prepared notes or note cards to help keep you on track as you present your findings
- Method of visual aid delivery: Everyone will use the provided
- . You will enter in your information in the powerpoint slides including the graphs and charts that you created for the major sections.
- Presentation Delivery Requirements:
- Find a place to record that has a distraction-free background
- You will dress professionally for the presentation (no hats, t-shirts, overly revealing attire, etc.)
- Business casual should be the goal for how you present yourself
- You want to make sure that you practice good public speaking delivery elements including:
- speaking with enthusiasm (vocal inflection rather than being monotone) and appropriate volume
- standing confidently (can be seen on camera from the waist-up
- use note cards to help you stay on track
- gesturing some throughout the presentation (helps keep attention of the audience)
What to include in the presentation:
- Brief overview: a brief overview of your topic area of interest.
- Sample description: explain the characteristics of your sample using central tendency and variability statistics.
- T-test results: explain your t-test variables and results of your test.
- ANOVA results: explain your oneway ANOVA variables and the results of your test.
- Correlation results: explain your correlation variables and the results of your test.
- Brief conclusion/reflection: In this section, quickly recap your main findings and reflect on what you learned from the results. This may also include things you learned from non-significant test results in addition to significant results.
