A Philosophy of Secular Education and Ideologies Compared and Contrasted to Christianity in Education

Candidates will reflect on the Philosophy and Ideology Charts that were completed over the past 5 weeks and select one of the following secular philosophies (Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, Existentialism, or Postmodernism) to compare and contrast with Christianity in Education. Candidates will cite and reference the Gutek textbook and the Bible to compose a paper that adheres to the following outline:

I. Introduction

1. Provide an overview of what you will share in the paper.

  1. End the introduction with a thesis statement.

II. Metaphysics What is real?

  1. Define metaphysics
  2. What is real according to the selected secular philosophy? What is the nature of the learner and the role of the teacher from the selected secular philosophy?
  3. What is real according to the Christian worldview? What is the nature of the learner and role of the teacher from the Christian worldview regarding metaphysics?

III. Epistemology What is truth? What is knowledge? How do you know? Why do you believe what you believe?

  1. Define epistemology
  2. What is the truth and how does one know what they know according to the selected secular philosophy?
  3. What is the view of curriculum from the selected secular philosophy?
  4. From a Christian worldview, what is true and how does one know that it is true? What should the curriculum entail from a Christian worldview regarding epistemology?

IV. Axiology What is of value? What is moral? What is ethical? What is beauty?

  1. Define axiology
  2. From the selected secular philosophy; What is of value? Who determines values, ethics, morals, and beauty?
  3. What is the purpose of school/schooling from the selected secular philosophy regarding axiology (ethics and morality)?
  4. From a Christian worldview, what is of value? Who determines values, ethics, morals, and beauty?
  5. What is the purpose of school/schooling from a Christian worldview?

V. Conclusion

  1. Provide an overview of the paper
  2. Provide one to two paragraphs explaining why a teachers philosophy of education matters and makes a difference to the learners in the classroom.
