Final exam

Directions Write a 750 word reflection essay (3-4 pages long, double-spaced) in response to the questions below. You must follow these directions and meet the length guidelines indicated to earn full points. Please consult the OpenStax Introduction of Sociology textbook and its chapter on social movements (Chapter 21), linked in the Module for this week. As always, any essays submitted containing plagiarism will receive ZERO points and you will not be able to make up this assignment. Avoid plagiarism very simply by putting everything in your own words and writing in your own original voice. Do not quote the textbook(s). NUMBER EACH QUESTION IN YOUR RESPONSE – points will be deducted for each question that is not numbered. Likewise, follow the instructions below to earn full credit. If you do not include actual statistics in your response to question 3, half of the points for that question will be deducted from your score. Questions 1) Explain the different types of social movements (reform, resistance, etc) and what you see to be the most important distinctions between them. Then identify which kind of social movement Black Lives Matter is. Explain how you see BLM in relation to the civil rights movement using this typology – are they the same kind of movement? The same movement? Or different in what key ways? Your response must be written in 2 paragraphs, at least one 1 full page long double-spaced. Worth 2 points. 2) Conduct a frame analysis of a slogan (always a good example of framing) from a social movement you know about that addresses inequality/injustice in terms of class, race or gender. You can always look on Google Images for protest signs from demonstrations associated with any given social movement; include an image or two in your response if you want. Is that slogan an example of diagnostic, prognostic or motivational framing? Or is it more than one at the same time? Be sure to explain the connection between diagnostic and prognostic framing in your response. Your response must be written in 3 paragraphs and be 1-1.5 pages long. Worth 3 points. 3) Discuss how the social movement you selected in Q2 responds to the social inequality we learned about in the last few weeks of our course (related to class, race or gender). Here you must include 3-4 ACTUAL STATISTICS from the assigned textbook reading by Khan in Weeks 3, 4 or 5. Remember, statistics do NOT speak for themselves; we must interpret what the research findings mean and theorize what mechanisms in our society produce the empirical patterns we see across data. So first present the statistics; then in a second paragraph explain what social forces or dynamics produce the patterns you see in the data; in your third paragraph, explain how the selected social movement proposes to solve/improve the dynamics that produce the inequality. Your response must be written in 3 paragraphs and be 1-1.5 pages long. Worth 3 points. LOL
