.The purpose of this discussion is to critically evaluate the effects of cannabis and its derivatives on sleep by examining recent academic research, assessing the credibility of sources, and considering how this information relates to cognitive behavioral therapy as a primary treatment for insomnia.
Step 1: Read
article on the effects of cannabis and its derivatives on sleep. The citation is provided below.
Morin, C. M., & Buysse, D. J. (2024). Management of Insomnia. The New England Journal of Medicine., 391(3), 247258.
In this article, Morin and Buysse (2024) state, “Cannabis, cannabidiol (CBD), and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) preparations are also widely used to treat sleep problems but are associated with mixed findings. The overall quality of evidence supporting the efficacy of cannabinoids for insomnia is low… Variation in cannabis-derived preparations is also relevant. For instance, CBD is stimulating at low doses and sedating at high doses, and THC has the opposite effects” (p. 255).
Step 2: Investigate the claim made by Morin and Buysse (2024) concerning cannabis and sleep disorders by locating and analyzing an academic research article in the SPC library online database that either supports the authors’ claim about the mixed findings of cannabis for insomnia treatment or refutes the authors’ claim about the low-quality evidence for cannabinoids.
Step 3: In at least 300 words, (1) provide a very brief review of the claim made in the article you have found; (2) support the academic authority of the source. In other words, what makes this source you found an authority? (3) How does this new information you have found impact the core thesis proposed by Morin and Buysse (2024): Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the most effective first-line treatment for insomnia? Please include the full APA citation for the article you selected, and also the hyperlink (the full url) to the article you selected.
