For thousands of years, communities had no police to protect them against criminals It was up to the citizens to protect their property, family, and livelihood. The concept of paying individuals to protect the community originated in England around the mid-1800s. Officers traveled primarily on foot and made an effort to foster relationships with communities. The police are the first component of the criminal justice system. The polices primary roles within the criminal justice system are to prevent crime and disorder, and to make arrests. The second component of the criminal justice system are the courts. The key responsibilities of the courts are to interpret the law and provide due process for those involved in cases. They also have the authority to dismiss, downgrade, or upgrade charges. Prosecutors also depend on clear and accurate police reporting to help build their case. The final component of the criminal justice system is corrections. The roles of corrections involve rehabilitation of criminals, providing justice and restitution to victims, and ensuring safe and humane conditions for those sentenced to serve time in correctional facilities I hope this message has conveyed my interest in becoming an officer within your department.
