Environmental Analysis for Organizational Design (50 Points)

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to help students analyze how an organizations external environment influences its organizational design. Students will evaluate environmental uncertainty, complexity, and change, and explain how organizational structure and design should adapt to achieve strategic fit.

Select an Organization
Choose one of the following:

Your current or past employer
A well-known organization (e.g., Netflix, Amazon, Toyota, Starbucks)
A realistic hypothetical organization (clearly describe the industry, size, and strategy)

Write a 34 page paper (APA format, double-spaced) that addresses the sections below.

A. Organizational Overview

Organization name, industry, and size
Mission, strategy, and primary goals

B. External Environment Analysis

Analyze the organizations external environment using the following dimensions:

Environmental Uncertainty
- Degree of change and unpredictability in the industry
Environmental Complexity
- Number and diversity of external factors (e.g., competitors, regulations, technology, customers)
Environmental Dynamism
- Speed and frequency of environmental change

You may incorporate frameworks such as PESTLE or Porters Five Forces to support your analysis.

C. Implications for Organizational Design

Explain how the external environment affects organizational design choices, including:

Mechanistic vs. organic structures
Centralization vs. decentralization
Formalization and standardization
Use of teams, boundary-spanning roles, or flexible structures

D. Evaluation of Current Design Fit

Assess how well the organizations current design fits its external environment
Identify at least two misalignments or risks related to environmental factors

E. Design Recommendations

Propose two specific organizational design changes to improve environmental fit
Justify each recommendation using environmental analysis and course concepts
Explain how the changes would enhance adaptability, performance, or resilience
