GUIDELINES:

  1. This paper will be based the movie The Smartest Guys in the Room which you will have to watch. This can be found in the book on Hulu, Netflix or at the library or here:
  2. You must watch the movie then discuss the ethical considerations answering the following questions:
  • How did the culture at Enron enable fraud throughout the organization including traders?
  • How did the action or inaction of senior executives (Lay, Skilling, Fastow, Board of Directors) contribute to creating the culture at Enron?
  • How did external stakeholders (accountants, bankers, investors, government officials) contribute to widespread fraud?
  1. Length 750 to 1000 words (typically 3-4 pages of text) Title page and references are not included in the word count. (standard 8.5 x 11 paper)
  2. Layout – Must include: Title page**; Introduction***; Main Body; Conclusion; References (bibliography)
  3. References Minimum number of references: 3, one of which may be your textbook. You may use books, articles from periodicals or newspapers, and peer reviewed journals (best). Wikipedia is none of these and is not an acceptable reference.
  4. Availability The movie is available on CD in the Lakeland Library. The film is available for free following this link

The movie is also available on Netflix or Hulu.

  1. Format – APA; New Times Roman 12 pt. font; 1 margins all around; double spaced
  2. Word Processing Formats – The ONLY formats accepted are: .doc, .docx, or .rtf (NO .wps)
  3. Citations APA guidelines are for author and year of publication. See APA lite for different types of citations
  4. Graphics Allowed. APA restricts graphics to black & white but color will be OK for this assignment.
  5. Grade/Point Value 80 pts. (8%) See the grading rubric below.

**Your introduction will act as a lead in to the rest of the paper performs the following: establish the topic and provide some general background information and reason for analysis. Basically, the introduction tells the reader WHY this paper is important and sets the expectation with the reader on what is to come. A good introduction also contains some hook statement that captures the readers interest and encourages him or her to read on. Usually 100 to 200 words in length for a short essay like this one.
