engagement assignment

This assignment integrates the theories of engagement you have read about with your direct practice work. In 3-5 pages double-spaced pages using APA style, please first describe a situation in your field placement that required engagement skills. Then, identify what engagement strategies you used drawing from the readings from modules 3 and 4. Please describe at least 2 strategies and cite the original source material you used to identify the strategy. Finally, please reflect on the process of engagement and answer the following questions:

  1. What went well?
  2. What did not work well? (E.g. did you make any mistakes?)
  3. Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?
  4. How did you apply principles of belief bonding (if appropriate) to your choices?
  5. What engagement strategies will you continue to build on in your work with this client or client system?

You may include a process recording (typed) to illustrate your examples. The purpose of this assignment is to be able to articulate and apply the concepts of engagement to your own field work.

” During my field placement at the school, I worked with a 10th-grade student on one on one counselling who disclosed experiencing sexual abuse while at school. She also shared details about her complicated family situation. She reported that she does not get along with her biological father, who was largely absent after she was in 8th grade and has made no effort to reach out even after being released from jail. The student also struggles with her stepfather, who favors her older sister and often argues with her, and she has conflicts with her stepmother, whom she believes caused the death of her stepbrother. Additionally, the student described strained or nonexistent relationships with her siblings from the same father but different mothers. She expressed feeling isolated, angry, and sad about her family circumstances. This situation required advanced engagement skills because the students experiences involved multiple layers of trauma, complex family dynamics, and a lack of trust in adults, making it essential to create a safe and supportive environment where she could share her feelings without judgment.

In this context, I implemented engagement strategies grounded in the readings from Module 4, specifically the Belief Bonding and Failures in Empathic Communication lectures (SWP I Module 04 Belief Bonding Transcript-2.pdf; SWP I Module 04 Failures in Empathic Communication Transcript-1.pdf). Two key strategies that I applied were active listening with reflective responses and open-ended, reflective questioning.
