Identify your elected/appointed officials at the local (Harrisburg), state (PA), and federal levels. County Sheriff Policy Influence Policy can and is influenced at various level of government. In fact, in a two-year Congressional term, approximately 5 million new words of law are enacted and thats only at the federal level. State and local politics and policies are equally as important and some of the laws/policies you interact with on a daily basis. For this section, you will select one of the above officials at each level (federal, state, and local) and highlight at least one key social policy they are involved in (consider legislation they have introduced, co-sponsored, or opposed, etc.). Critically analyze the policys impact on individuals, families, and communities and why/how this person has made their stance. Be sure to also discuss the barriers these officials may face in advocating for change and how these obstacles reflect larger systemic issues in the policy-making process. Additionally, you will provide background details regarding: information about their personal and professional background term limit information for each position and when the next election will take place, if applicable how long has the person been in this role did they hold any prior elected/appointed offices, if so when and where were the appointed, by who what committees are they on, if any (for Representatives and Senators, including city and county levels) what leadership positions do they hold, if any (i.e. Chair of XYZ Committee) Reflection on the Learning Process In 2-3 complete paragraphs, reflect on the learning process. Consider thinking about: What did you learn about your elected/appointed representative? Reflect on how understanding the structure and function of government allows you to identify and challenge systemic barriers that prevent individuals and communities from accessing resources.
