CHAPTER ONE: A Theory-Based Approach to Family Involvement in Early Childhood Education
CONTEXTUALIST THEORIES:
There are three contextualist theories- bioecological, sociocultural, and family systems that demonstrate relationships among children, families, and communities that are crucial to effective family involvement in early childhood education. When early childhood teachers apply these theories, their family involvement practices will be more authentic and supportive.
a. Explain Urie Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) Bioecological Theory, and central to the model are four con concepts. What are they? Bronfenbrenner’s five environmental systems. Discuss the five systems.
b. Explain the Contextualist c. Family system
2. Discuss Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory. How does it parallel Bronfenbrenner’s explanation of the importance of the external social world for a child’s development?
