Selection of National Security Archive:

  • Choose either the national security archive collection for Argentina or Peru.
  • Students seeking to explore a different collection must obtain approval from the professor. You must demonstrate background knowledge on the proposed case study.

Document Selection and Analysis:

  • Select five documents from the chosen national security archive collection that pertain to the topics of human rights, armed guerrillas, and state terrorism.
  • Each document should represent a significant aspect of the country’s national security, foreign policy, or internal affairs during the specified period.
  • Provide a detailed analysis for each document, focusing on its historical significance, implications, and relevance to the country’s national security narrative.
  • Each analysis should be approximately 500 words in length.

Document Details and Citation:

  • For each document, include the following details:
  • Name and kind of document (e.g., embassy cable, memo, brief), including the author if available.
  • Date of the document.
  • Proper Chicago Turabian Citation.

Formatting Guidelines:

  • Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced.
  • Include page numbers, no title page required
  • Organize the assignment with clear headings and subheadings for each document analysis.

Assessment Criteria:

  • Depth and clarity of analysis for each document.
  • Demonstration of understanding of historical context and national security issues.
  • Effective use of primary sources to support arguments.
  • Adherence to formatting and citation guidelines (Chicago Turabian Style).
