Culture influences the way we think, feel, and behave. Understanding our own cultural identity and how it has influenced us helps us to better understand differences in others. To do this, we can look at our primary and secondary cultural diversity characteristics. Primary characteristics are usually the most visible to others, while secondary characteristics are usually defined by life experiences. Secondary characteristics may contribute to our implicit biases. In this assessment, you examine the characteristics that contribute to your cultural identity and reflect on how they have impacted your life experiences.

Reflect on the primary and secondary characteristics that make up your own cultural identity. Possible diversity characteristics include, but are not limited to, the following:
