Diverse Needs Scenarios

Another important part of managing the secondary classroom is ensuring that students diverse needs are met. Diverse needs are often related to language, culture, socioeconomic, or even mental health. A teacher must be able to communicate with families and colleagues to establish positive learning environments that meet these diverse needs.

Imagine you are a content area teacher for each of the students described. Respond to each scenario in 150-200 words with an explanation of how the scenario would be handled and the communication that would take place with families and colleagues to build a safe, positive climate of openness, mutual respect, support, and inquiry.

  • Scenario 1: A parent of a Hispanic child is monolingual and has limited English communication skills. The child is often the interpreter. You want to be sure that the parent is aware of the student’s failing status. How would you go about ensuring the information is translated correctly? What resources could you use to help with translations? Who could you contact at the school site for support? How will you continue to communicate with this parent? Include the results expected from this intervention.
  • Scenario 2: Many of your students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. In your science class, there is a required $10 lab fee. Most of your students are unable to afford the fee. How would you go about working with students, parents, and the community to secure the funds or the items needed? What other avenues could you explore in helping with the lab fee? Include the results expected from this intervention.
  • Scenario 3: Multiple students have approached you with concerns about the mental health of another classmate. You have also noticed a change in this students performance. What would your next steps be? Who can you contact at your school site or in your community for support? Include the results expected from this intervention.

After responding to these scenarios, consider in a 200-250 word reflection the following:

  • The methods you will use to communicate with learners, families, colleagues, and other stakeholders about the needs of students in the established learning environment. Consider communication when both gathering and disseminating information.
  • Discuss how, as an educator, you can take on leadership roles to advocate for meeting the needs of students, strengthening the learning environment, and enacting a system of change.

Support your responses with 3-5 scholarly references.
